Can you provide a secure environment and a safe way to nurture their natural instincts?2025-10-13T17:40:08-04:00

Skyes are alert protectors with a strong prey drive, needing a fenced yard or leash walks to stay safe. Skyes were originally bred to hunt formidable vermin on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. Because of this, they tend to chase small animals. They do best in homes where they can practice their natural instincts in a safe way. Skye Terriers excel at sports like FastCAT and Barn Hunt, and also love a game of fetch or a trip to go swimming.

Do you have time for regular grooming and exercise, considering their size?2025-10-13T17:15:44-04:00

Skye Terriers boast a stunning double coat requiring regular maintenance. Don’t let the coat fool you, though. It’s much easier to care for than it looks! A bath and brush every 10-14 days will keep their coats healthy, strong, and free of painful matting. Males stand 10 inches tall and weigh 35-38 pounds, while females are 9.5 inches and 30-32 pounds, with a sturdy, low-slung build. They enjoy moderate exercise and are always up for adventure, whether it’s a game of ball in the yard or hiking rough terrain, they will be by your side. They are also happy to spend an occasional lazy day on the couch, cuddled up with their people. Their versatile nature means they can thrive in many environments. Whether it be apartment living, downtown city blocks, or open farm land, they are happiest wherever they are, as long as they are with their owners!

Can you handle an independent yet sensitive personality?2025-10-13T17:08:09-04:00

Skyes are intelligent and have a mind of their own, needing gentle, firm guidance rather than harsh correction. Their sensitivity means they thrive with positive reinforcement and take time to process information before they act.

Are you prepared for a long-term commitment and a slow-maturing breed?2025-10-13T17:05:57-04:00

The Skye Terrier requires a lifelong dedication, typically living 12-15 years. They mature slowly, reaching full physical and emotional development around three years, so patience is key during their puppy and adolescent stages. It is important to work with a breeder who puts in the time and effort during the first twelve weeks of life, a critical period of time in a puppy’s development. Ongoing training is important, especially during adolescence. Skye Terriers are smart and sensitive. They respond best to positive reinforcement, and will seek out mutual respect from their human counterparts. If you’re ready to invest time in training and bonding, this loyal companion will reward you with unwavering devotion.
