Versatility Award Guidelines

The typical Skye Terrier (“Skye”) is a hardy and active, but not constantly so, dog possessing a keen mind, typical terrier sensibilities, and an undeniable loyalty to his/her people. Skye owners seizing the opportunity to channel these characteristics into the myriad of dog sports available today typically find success, a tighter bond with their Skye, new friendships, and a lot of fun. The STCA offers Versatility Awards, a progressive recognition program, as a means of recognizing and rewarding the accomplishments of dogs participating in various activities.

Titles/events characterized as “Introductory” level on the Versatility Award application may be met by the average Skye/owner team with moderate effort. Those defined as “Advanced” typically require sustained effort over time. The Versatility Award levels reflect the commitment of Skye/owner teams across a broader range of activities.

General Provisions

  1. Versatility Awards are awarded to individual dogs registered with the AKC (full, limited, or Purebred Alternative Listing [PAL]), not to the owner(s); the Skye to be awarded must be the same dog that earned all qualifying titles and/or that participated in all other qualifying activities.
  2. Versatility Award eligibility is limited to Skyes owned by at least one STCA member in good standing when a) the last qualifying title was earned or activity was completed, b) the application for an award is submitted, and c) the award is presented. Credit will not be given to “last” qualifying titles/activity participation during the time period the applicant’s membership had lapsed. In the case of co-ownership by multiple STCA members, one member must submit the application but all members will be identified on the award.
  3. The titles/activities eligible to qualify for the Versatility Award are identified on the Versatility Award Application Form, reviewed annually by the STCA Performance Committee, and approved annually by the STCA Board of Directors. AKC titles and other events/activities not listed on the form may be submitted for consideration by the Committee.
  4. The title award/activity participation period(s) will coincide with the calendar year; Versatility Awards will be presented at the National Specialty the following year.
  5. During the inaugural year only (i.e., to be awarded October, 2023), the last qualifying title/activity may have been completed in 2021 or 2022. For awards to be presented in 2024 and forward, the last title/activity must have been completed in the prior calendar year.
  6. A completed Versatility Award application (one per dog per award level), including copies of all related title certificates and/or participation verification by an independent third-party, must be submitted by a STCA member-owner to the Performance Committee Chair. Applications must be received by June 1 for award at the upcoming National Specialty.
  7. Owners are to submit applications for the highest award level for which the dog is eligible.
  8. STCA does not endorse any activity/event and does not accept liability for accidents or injuries incurred during them.
